Home Run
Well, my blogging plans didn’t work out so well, but we had a wonderful time in the Caribbean and at Walt Disney World. Despite all the activity, I managed to get in 20 miles of treadmill running last week, but only one 5k run around the hotel perimeter so far this week. It’s good to be back home, where I plan to spend the next few weeks doing laundry.
Here’s a photo I cribbed from the Disney photo album site of me and the Lovely Mrs. A. pretending to be surprised by a Photoshopped alien in front of the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. If you look elsewhere in the photo, you’ll see something even scarier – more evidence that America needs to do more running.

Why I Run
Greetings from the Caribbean!
As I write this we are about to dock at San Juan, Puerto Rico. We spent yesterday on the beach in Turks & Caicos. There hasn’t been much opportunity for land running, so I’ve been doing 30 minutes of speedwork on the treadmill every morning. Running on a treadmill while rolling on the open seas is pretty challenging.
Anyway, if I needed any further motivation for running I found it yesterday on the beach when I spotted this guy – have your eye bleach handy.
Internet access is expensive so I have to be brief. I’ll try to update again soon.

2) San Juan, Puerto Rico
3) St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands
4) Half Moon Cay, Bahamas
5) Walt Disney World
It pays to marry the owner of Island Getaways Travel.

Maui No Ka ‘Oi – My Race Plan, Not So Much
When things are going well, and you’re finally recovering from a nagging injury, and you feel like a world-beater, is when you tend to do really, really stupid things. A few months ago I concocted this schedule for myself:
September 13 – Buffalo Stampede 10-miler (done)
September 19 – Front Street Mile
September 20 – Maui Half-Marathon
September 27 – 20 mile training run
October 4 – Sacramento Cowtown Half-Marathon
Being the stubborn ass I am, I now have to figure a way to run all this without aggravating my balky right leg, and yet not embarrass myself. Fortunately, I had a similar dilemma last year, and it culminated in “my best worst race.” When your worst-case scenario is stringing together 13 Maui Miles, it’s hard to worry about it.
The wild card this year is the Front Street Mile. I signed up for this because I had never run a mile race and I wanted to test myself. That was before I was humbled in the 1500 meters in June. It also has an unusual element for your typical mile race: a 180-degree turn in the middle of it.
Anyway, it’s highly unlikely I’ll be doing any blogging while lounging on the beach. So you’ll just have to wait with bated breath until I get back next week. Aloha.
