Get the Eyebleach Ready for This “Marathong”

untitledDateline – Ormiston:

Hundreds of people lined Main Street at 10pm to cheer on the dozens of runners who pulled on nothing but skimpy underwear and trainers to take part in The Brave Mile ‘marathong’, in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support and to raise awareness of health issues for men.

And, after baring all, the runners – aged between 18 and 60 – were immortalised in their imaginative undies, from pink tutus to animal print thongs, by Ormiston-based photographer John McKenzie, to create a calendar that will be available to buy from the village’s Hopetoun Arms Hotel in two weeks’ time.

Organisers Alastair Hume and Ian Webb, co-owners of the Hopetoun Arms, came up with the idea for The Brave Mile after one too many drinks in the pub.

Good Argument for Going Commando

The Hereford High School cross country team thought they had won the county championship when they learned one of their runners had been disqualified, dropping the team to third place. His offense? He was wearing black compression shorts with visible white stitching underneath his running shorts, in violation of Rule 9, Section 6, Article 1b of the National Federation of High Schools rule book, which states: “Items displaying seams stitched on the outside of the garment in a visible contrasting color to the undergarment will be illegal beginning with the 2009-10 school year.”

Track officials defended the ruling, and noted that other teams had changed clothes to comply. But no one seems to have a good explanation for the rule. “Your cross country uniform is supposed to say that ‘I’m from high school XYZ.’ Philosophically, that’s what ‘team’ is all about,” said Becky Oakes, assistant director of the National Federation of State High School Associations. “The Spandex undergarment began to get away from that.”

The ruling received national attention this week, with Deadspin stating, “I don’t know if any post I’ve written for this site has generated more public feedback.”

When Underwear Is Outlawed, Only Outlaws Will Wear Underwear

The International Swimming Federation ruled that competitive swimmers cannot wear anything underneath their swimsuits, for modesty’s sake or otherwise. The decision came days after Sweden’s Therese Alshammar lost a world record performance when officials learned she was wearing a second swimsuit. The rationale was that a second suit provides increased buoyancy.

This made me consider hypothetical equivalent situations in the world of running:

* A runner is disqualified when it is discovered her maxi pad has wings.

* A runner loses a bronze medal for attaching propellers to his nip guards.

* A runner’s photo finish victory is taken away because her pointy sports bra exceeded established limits.

* Pre-race ice baths cause controversy over whether shrinkage reduces drag and gives runners an unfair advantage.

* US Track & Field rules thongs do not provide an actual slingshot effect.

* Victoria’s Secret and UnderArmor to merge after third date.
