Friday Five: Weird Running-Related Headlines

The purpose of a headline is to get you to read the story. Incoherence or weirdness isn’t necessarily a drawback and might actually be an advantage. Such as:

1) “Damp chicken run raises ¬£2,000 for charity

2) “Should Partially Blind Triathletes Be Forced to Run Wearing Blackout Glasses?

3) “Burnt ultramarathon runners consider suing

4) “Phuket Marathon Runners ‘Can Beat Phuket Gravity’” (“Phuket gravity” is unexplained in the story, or anywhere in English on the Internet)

5) The website Ninemsn ultimately revised its headline¬†to read, “Hundreds to run for premature baby treatment.” That’s a vast improvement over the original headline…

Army of runners compete for premature babies
