Mostly as a way to avoid “violent vomiting and explosive diarrhea.”
I don’t know if the water delivery system was to blame in that case, but I think it more likely it was the cup handling. During the California International Marathon last Sunday I did notice quite a few volunteers handing out water with their bare fingers in the cups (others wore food handling gloves). Even if you avoid stomach distress, it’s good way to pick up a cold or flu while your immune system is compromised.
I also don’t see why you would train for months to ensure that you are 100% prepared for race day, only to turn your hydration and fueling needs over to strangers.
