The Carnival of Running #84
Welcome to the 84th edition of The Carnival of Running!
In the pantheon of misguided track stunts, it’s hard to match Jesse Owens vs. the racehorse, but Tyson Gay vs. Shaquille O’Neal comes close:
The producers of The Biggest Loser are hosting a 5k/1 Mile Challenge to entice people into the fitness habit (and provide footage for a special) beginning with a September 25 event in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Next year, there will be additional events across the country. Trainer Bob Harper and contestants from previous seasons will be on hand.
Ultra runner Dean Karnazes not only made the Men’s Fitness list of “Amazing Feats of Endurance,” but he was featured on Stan Lee’s Superhumans on the History Channel.
Deena Kastor joined Kara Goucher and Paula Radcliffe on the list of pregnant elite marathoners. So much for frozen eggs.
The New York Times devotes its resources to reporting that former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich spends a lot of money at Fleet Feet.
Running a marathon is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, except for Stefaan Engels, for whom it’s an everyday experience.
Mike Lowson describes his introduction to running and declares, “Soon I’ll be eagerly rubbing petroleum jelly into my nether regions like a real runner without a shred of embarrassment.”
Nothing is unbelievable when it comes to the things people do, but are there really people in danger of ”tripping and falling while walking to stepping off a curb and into the path of an oncoming truck while running” because they’re on a cell phone?
Disney signed Jeff Galloway as official training consultant for its running events. Here’s his introductory video.
I’m not a big believer in the Galloway method for racing, but I’m hoping he can teach people to use it while in line for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
Old Dude of the Week is 81-year-old Geoff Etherington, who just ran a 20k in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1:45. However, I don’t know if he could have managed the pubathon, which included 14 pubs over a distance of 18.5 miles.
This week’s linky love goes out to Go, Tracy, Go!, Running in the Family, and The Comfort Zone. Give them all a look!
That’s all for this week, friends. It’s International Literacy Day, so read the Carnival again. Submit your posts to carnival@runningisfunny.com. Until next time, run away!

Oh, my gosh, thank you for the link! Here I was, scrolling through, laughing at Rod Blagojevich and I was pleasantly surprised to see my blog listed! Thanks!
I caught that episode of Superhumans and was pretty disappointed. The most flexible host couldn’t carry Dean’s jock, and we’re supposed to be amazed? Ooooh… :P
Shaq moves awfully well for a 7 foot 300+ pound guy. I wouldn’t want to race him in the 100 for money.
