It’s Pata Pata Time!
Yeah, it’s off-topic, but what the heck.
You know you’re getting old when you can no longer find your favorite songs on the radio, but they suddenly start popping up in commercials and TV show montages. There’s a whole generation that thinks of The Who as “those CSI: music guys” and a lot more people who think Ian Hunter is some guy who writes a running blog. Anyway, I’m watching TV last night and this Honda commercial comes on:
Someday you’ll know what I mean, but it’s a weird feeling to hear a song constantly when you’re nine years old, then not hear it again for 42 years. But yes, it really was Pata Pata by Miriam Makeba. Thanks to YouTube and iTunes, this kind of stuff will never disappear again:
It got me to thinking about other songs that I heard a lot in the late Sixties, then never heard again. So let me introduce you to Desmond Dekker and the Aces singing “Israelites” …before Toyota gets hold of it.

These are a couple of my favorites growing up too.
But I suspect I’m a tad younger than you.
Thanks for the youtube links!
Desmond
I’ll be honest. I never knew that that song was produced before Honda. And I’m in that demo that you refer to.
Good ol’ Desmond Dekker. I dig that song. Though I probably wouldn’t have known it if I didn’t do time working in a record store.
I echo your sentiments. Thanks for sharing both songs of our youth.
