The Carnival of Running #44

Welcome to the 44th edition of The Carnival of Running!

Usain Bolt takes on the ESPN staff.

I got this submission from Run for the Medal just before going on vacation, so my apologies for the delay, but it deserves special attention. Check it out right now. I’ll wait here.

Pretty cool, huh?

In this week’s celebrity running news, actor Edward Norton plans to run in the New York City Marathon with three Maasai warriors to raise money for a Kenyan wilderness conservation organization. He’s tweeting about it. Despite living in New York City, this Ed Norton will not be running the marathon.

Comedian Eddie Izzard ran 43 marathons in 51 days for charity, while four contestants from last season’s The Biggest Loser will run the five-mile Fall Colors Bridge Race in Mackinaw City, Michigan.

Two stars of The Today Show completed a sprint triathlon, but Ironman Widow thinks self-absorption is a defining characteristic of triathletes.

If running celebrities aren’t your thing, how about running reporters?

Isaiah Janzen passes along the news: It’s all about the Grape Nuts.

Todd Goold used mapping technology to create 3-D road races so you can experience big city marathons at your own pace, or just relive past glories. There’s only a small selection to begin with, but his site has simulations of Boston, New York, London and Chicago.

If you organize a 5k race to benefit the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, of course you’re going to call it The Great Donut Dash. It’s a strategic event, too. You can just run as fast as you can, or you can stop at the aid stations and consume donuts along the way. Each donut eaten reduces your finish time.

Habitat for Humanity opted instead for the Crunchy Chicken Challenge, in which runners had to down a crunchy chicken cheddar wrap halfway through the race.

Coverage of the Maui Marathon included this article about the spectators. My favorite quote: “‘Let me tell you, it’s exhausting watching people run. I was ready to give up by mile 14 or so.”

No matter how badly your last marathon went, at least you weren’t stung in the mouth by a wasp.

This week’s linky love goes out to Art and Sole, and to ananas of From 2 to 26.2. She is not this ananas, but I believe they would really get along great.

That’s all for this week, friends. Happy Birthday, Rula Lenska! Submit your posts to carnival@runningisfunny.com. Until next time, run away!
